About Course
Describe sources of and control measures for noise in a workplace
Purpose:
This Course requires learners to have an understanding of the sources of and control measures for noise in a workplace
Industrial development and the increase in mechanization in all industries have resulted in an ever-increasing incidence of hearing loss and other noise-related hazards to exposed workers.
Noise is not a new hazard and indeed was observed in the 1700s when workers hammered copper, became hard of hearing, and when they grew old at this work, became completely deaf.
As noise has been identified as a significant health hazard for workers, the South African Mining Industry introduced a hearing conservation program (HCP) in 1988.
The HCP subsequently became compulsory, since labour-intensive methods common to many mineral extraction and processing operations were resulting in large numbers of people being routinely exposed to noise beyond the legally recognized safe limit of 85 dB(A).
